Hi everyone,

Well ANNA has turned 55 years "young" as we plan to go on a long time. Although quite lengthy, I have attached the History of ANNA from it originated in 1999 ( I was there) until 2014. We are continue to develop our history and maybe in 2029 there will be the next chapters. I hope you take the time to read this. It definitely portrays the work ANNA does to enhance the health of kidney patients through the excellence of nephrology nurses!

HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN NEPHROLOGY NURSES ASSOCIATION (ANNA)

1969-2014

1969

  • American Association of Nephrology Nurses is formed: 1st formal gathering of

          Nephrology nurses in Atlantic City, NJ. Bernice Hinckley elected President

1970

  • Name changed to American Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians

          (AANNT)

  • First ANNA National Symposium held in Washington, DC in conjunction with ASAIO

1971

  • ANNA regional structure developed

1972

  • Publication of the AANNT newsletter began
  • Standards of Clinical Practice, section I.,Hemodialysis published

1973

  • AANNT represented by Mary O’Neil and Betty Preston at the 1st meeting of the National Federation of Specialty Nursing held at the 5 Western Whitehouse

1974

  • ANNA Journal began publication
  • 1st management firm hired

1975-75

  • Standards of Clinical Practice, Section II: Transplantation was published

1975-76

  • Standards of Clinical Practice, Section III: Peritoneal Dialysis was published
  • AANNT helped sponsor the 1st summer camp for kids undergoing hemodialysis in upstate NY
  • The National Association of Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis and Transplantation presented its’ for Outstanding Contribution to Patient Welfare to AANNT

1976-77

  • Standards of Clinical Practice IV: Acute Renal Failure was published
  • Position on The Role of the Hemodialysis Technician was published

1977

AANNT received accreditation from American Nurses Association (ANA) as a provider and approver for continuing education

  • AANNT first represented at the European Dialysis Transplant and Nurses Association (EDTNA)?
  • AANNT hires its’ first Education Director

1978-79

  • Position paper published: The Role of the Licensed Practical Nurse in Dialysis
  • Change in management firm instituted
  • 1st Long Range planning retreat held

  • AANNT hires AJ Jannetti as management firm
  • AANNT Journal expands to 6 issues per year: monographs on Renal Osteodystrophy and Transplantation published

  • More than $90,000 in scholarships, grants and awards was distributed to ANNA members during the annual Nephrology Recognition Luncheon
  • Health Policy (HP) workshop opened to approximately 75 elected national and regional association leaders as well as members of the HP committee
  • Gardner, Carton, and Douglas, a Washington DC based firm contracted to help expand ANNA’s legislative and public policy agenda, clinical priorities, and member participation at the grass roots level
  • Celebrated 1st Nephrology Nurse Week (NNW) in September
  • Acute Care SIG approved
  • ANA recognized nephrology nursing as a specialty

2007

  • Co-hosted the 2007 Nursing Community Meeting in Washington DC to unify support for a legislative request of $25 million for Nursing Workforce Development Program
  • A formal Mentoring and Role Modeling Program for members launched through the ANNA website
  • ANNA mission statement released
  • More than 78 nephrology nurses convened in DC for ANNA’s 9th HP Workshop to lobby for issues related to ANNA nurses, and individuals working with people with kidney disease
  • Developed an educational program, “Insights Into Anemia Management: What Every Nurse Should Know” and delivered to 40 chapters

  • ANNA took an active role in addressing the CMS proposal that outlined a “bundled” payment for dialysis services

  • “Go Green” initiatives were implemented for election voting, electronic membership renewal, virtual town hall meetings, and online meeting evaluations

  • Reorganized SIGs into Specialty Practice Networks (SPNs) to broaden participation opportunities for ANNA members working in various modalities of treatment
  • Partnered with American Kidney Foundation in the “Pair Up” national campaign to increase education and screening for CKD
  • ANNA pledged support for the “Joining Forces” initiative developed by the U.S. White House and First Lady Michelle Obama
  • All content from NNJ since 2000 was migrated into ANNA’s Online Library for accessibility availability
  • Nephrology Nursing Scope of Practice and Standard of Care (7th) published

  • ANNA became a pioneer member of the Kidney Health Initiative, a partnership organized by the American Society of Nephrology between the kidney community and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to address the issues of developing new and innovative drugs and treatments
  • ANNA forged new connections with CMS and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid innovations

  • Regional structure was eliminated and merged into one ANNA
  • The governance structure was implemented from a nationally elected Vice President to a nationally elected BOD
  • Developed a new strategic plan with the new mission statement “ANNA promotes excellence in and appreciation of nephrology nursing so we can make a difference in people with kidney disease
  • Initiated Road to Success program to assist volunteer leaders to identify, and build current strengths
  • Annual Virtual Lobby Day was established
